Simple carbs like white bread, saltine crackers, and white rice are bad news for your oral health. In fact, these food items can be even worse for your teeth than certain types of candy. This is why you should avoid them and what you should eat instead.

Simple Carbs Contribute to Oral Bacteria

Simple carbohydrates are starchy foods that break down into sugar. Unfortunately, oral bacteria love to feed off of sugar, allowing them to accumulate and grow. With time, bacteria form a sticky substance called plaque that will cling to the teeth, releasing acids that damage the enamel and the gums. This can lead to cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease, all of which can lead to problems with your overall health as well as the health of your mouth.

What to Eat Instead

When it comes to carbohydrates, not all foods are created equally in regards to nutrition or dental health. While cookies, soda, and crackers can be destructive to the mouth, there are many other good options available. Whole grain pasta, for example, contains less sugar than white pasta, and it can be found in a variety of varieties and shapes. If you enjoy bread, whole wheat options are also better than white bread.

Snack foods are also available in low carb varieties. Popcorn, for example, is a good choice, and snacking on it can help to boost attentiveness and energy throughout the day. Fiber is also fibrous and a better option than processed, starchy snacks, especially when you choose air-popped varieties.
