Porcelain Veneers

Your teeth play many important roles in your mouth. They allow you to bite, chew, and speak. Your teeth also play an integral role in the quality of your smile. Imperfections in your teeth, including minor ones, can have a major impact on your smile, and your confidence. When you are embarrassed about your smile, you may try to do everything you can to hide it. At Essen Dentistry, we can improve the appearance of your teeth, enhancing the beauty of your smile and boosting your confidence, with porcelain veneers.

What are Veneers?

There are many different issues that can affect the appearance of your teeth, and the quality of your smile. These issues include:

  • Chips or cracks in your tooth enamel.
  • Gaps between your teeth.
  • Teeth that are slightly overlapped.
  • Misshapen teeth.
  • Small teeth.
  • Discoloration that cannot be treated with whitening.

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment that is used to restore the appearance of teeth affected by minor flaws. They resemble thin shells and are designed to be bonded to the front surfaces of damaged teeth, completely transforming the way the tooth looks to improve the quality of your smile.

Benefits of Porcelain

Veneers are typically made from either composite resin or porcelain. While both materials blend in with the color of your natural teeth, providing you with a beautiful restoration, porcelain is often the preferred material. There are many reasons for this.

  • Porcelain provides a more natural appearance. Even though both materials are tooth-colored, porcelain provides a more natural look. In addition to being stained to match the color of your teeth, porcelain also has similar light reflection properties to tooth enamel.
  • Porcelain is stronger. Composite resin costs less, but porcelain is stronger and can last longer. Where composite veneers last 7 to 10 years, porcelain can last 15 years or more.
  • Porcelain is stain-resistant. Composite veneers are porous, meaning they can collect stains. Unlike your natural teeth, however, composite cannot be whitened. Porcelain, on the other hand, is stain-resistant, and resists stains better than your natural teeth.

Placing Your Porcelain Veneers

Placing porcelain veneers requires two separate appointments. At your first appointment, we remove a small portion of enamel from the front surfaces of the affected teeth. This creates space for your veneers to sit in properly with the rest of your teeth, providing you with a completely natural appearance. After removing the enamel, we take an impression of your mouth. This impression is sent to our dental lab, where it is used to design and create your custom porcelain veneers.

In most cases, temporary veneers are not necessary, but they can be provided for aesthetic concerns. Once your veneers are completed, we check your veneers for fit, appearance, and a comfortable bite. If there are no adjustments needed, your veneers are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth, and you leave the office with a brand-new, dazzling smile.

Even the most minor cosmetic flaws in your teeth can have a significant impact on the quality of your smile. With porcelain veneers, we can help to completely transform the appearance of your teeth, allowing you to smile confidently. Call Essen Dentistry today at (772) 210-7610 to learn more.
